Overview
The 1916 US Open Cup Final featured a Fall River club in their third decade, a bonafide superclub in Bethlehem Steel, a partisan sellout New England crowd and international tension.

The Brit born Steelmen were on on a six-year 162-6-1 tear in US club play. The American born Rovers didn't care.

The match took an ugly turn in the 80th minute. A disputed penalty was converted by the Steelmen to break a 0-0 tie. As time expired an equally controversial non-call in the Steel box sent Bethlehem to victory - and Fall River supporters boiling onto the pitch into a riot.

In 1917 - in front of heightened security - Rovers stormed back to the Final and beat their arch nemesis.
